Florida Governor DeSantis Executive Order #20-112 Potentially Allows Florida Massage Therapists to Open Amid Confusion with High Risk
Florida Governor DeSantis Executive Order #20-112 on April 30, 2020 has in vague language potentially opened massage therapy as part of his Phase I in Florida. In the Executive Order spas and gyms where many massage therapists work are still closed. Attempts to clarify exactly what this means for massage therapy have been met with vagueness, and passing the decision to others who will not make one. Opening at this time where social distancing is not possible while doing a massage creates an ethical challenge for massage therapists. For possible solutions to keeping yourself and your clients safe while practicing massage during COVID-19
Now is the time to start thinking about how you are going to make your office a safe environment for yourself and your clients when you reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Create policies, tools and checklists to keep you and your clients safe for that magical day when we can start treating clients again.
The COVID-19 virus is real and it won’t be gone before massage therapists start treating clients again. Your governor is not a massage therapist and is likely to think he/she is doing you and your clients a favor by opening massage therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic could go on for several years. The pressure will be on to open even though we cannot practice sufficient social distancing and it makes it very hard to do no harm. Screening and disinfecting are going to be the most important tools we have to create safety for ourselves and our clients. It is important that we take this time to prepare so that when we do open the risks are minimal for both us and our clients. The first tool we need to develop is the ability to screen clients so that only those clients who are least likely to be exposed to or to have COVID-19 will be treated. This will require planning and the development of a screening tool to be used before scheduling.

On the financial front the government assistance is starting to move. In Florida there is a new online site to apply for unemployment that is vastly superior to the old site. The IRS now has given you the ability to track your stimulus payment which will allow you to plan more accurately for when you will receive it. As of Friday April 17th there will be a tool to set up direct deposit for your stimulus payment. PayPal has now entered the Paycheck Protection Plan which will allow you to apply for Small Business Loans through their online site. Watch out for Debt Collectors. Your stimulus check money is not protected when it goes into your personal account and your deposit could be garnished. The money should be taken out right away, so keep a close eye on your personal accounts.
